Montana: Unpublished, 1960. Original pastel drawing with crayon on paper. Signed by the artist lower right. Born in Kalispell, Montana, Nancy McLaughlin lived for 5 years on the Blackfeet Reservation, where her childhood friends were members of the Blackfeet Nation. After studying art at Montana State University, McLaughlin spent the rest of her life as a professional artist and is best known for her sculptures, paintings and drawings of Native American subjects. From 1952 until 1964 she was married to famed western artist Ace Powell; during part of that time she signed her works as Nancy McLaughlin Powell. Her works can be found in the permanent collections of many museums, including Smithsonian American Art Museum, Hockaday Museum of Art, Buffalo Bill Center of the West, and Montana Museum of Art and Culture. The subject of this drawing was a Blackfeet chief named Owen Heavy Breast (1840-1913). The drawing was based on a photograph.. SIGNED. First Edition. Single Sheet. Collectible-Fine.
