About This Item

From Here to Eternity, James Jones. First edition, first printing. Dust Jacket: Very Good. An unclipped jacket with original price ($4.50) still intact. In mylar protective wrapper. There is chipping and foxing on borders of jacket otherwise very good.

Hardcover: Very Good+ New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1951. Black cloth with gold lettering on spine. No writing or markings in the book, 861 pp., author photo by Pat Moera. This is a first printing, with 'A' on copyright page, first issue jacket with authors photo on rear panel rather than reviews found on later issue jackets.

This is the authors first published work. The novel won the National Book Award in 1952, was later made into an Academy Award-winning film starring Burt Lancaster, Montgomery Clift and Frank Sinatra. Named one of the 100 Best Novels of the 20th century by the Modern Library Board.

The book is loosely based on Jones' experiences in the pre-World War II Hawaiian Division's 27th Infantry and the unit in which he served, Company E ("The Boxing Company").

Synopsis

James Ramon Jones was an American author known for his explorations of World War II and its aftermath. His novel, From Here to Eternity, won the Nation Book Award in 1952. This action-drama novel is set in the 1930’s in Hawaii, and culminates in the assault on Pearl Harbor in December of 1941. Although the book may appear to be solely a war novel, it has been touted as the best account of life in the peacetime army ever written.  With brilliantly descriptive scenes and richly detailed characters, the author captures and holds the readers interest.
