About This Item

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1951. Very good in very good minus jacket.. First edition of the National Book Award-winning novel of intersecting lives in Hawaii in the months before the attack on Pearl Harbour - adapted into a star-studded, Oscar-winning film. James Jones drew on his own experiences as an infantryman to set the stage for FROM HERE TO ETERNITY; his portrayal of the interplay and clash of personalities at a Hawaiian barracks earned him the 1952 National Book Award.
The film adaptation of FROM HERE TO ETERNITY features several changed narrative elements to appease the Production Code Office and the US Army, including the removal of references to homosexuality and venereal disease. In return, the Army allowed the production to film on-location and to use aircraft. With a cast including Burt Lancaster, Deborah Kerr, and Frank Sinatra, it was nominated for 12 Academy Awards including Best Picture, which it won. 8.25'' x 5.75''. Original black paper boards, gilt-lettered spine. In original unclipped ($4.50) color pictorial dust jacket by SKA jacket design. Scribner seal and "A" on copyright page. [12], 861, [1] pages. Very light wear to boards, slight soil to bottom edge of text block. Jacket with toned spine, area of dampstain to top of rear panel, a bit of edgewear.

Synopsis

James Ramon Jones was an American author known for his explorations of World War II and its aftermath. His novel, From Here to Eternity, won the Nation Book Award in 1952. This action-drama novel is set in the 1930’s in Hawaii, and culminates in the assault on Pearl Harbor in December of 1941. Although the book may appear to be solely a war novel, it has been touted as the best account of life in the peacetime army ever written.  With brilliantly descriptive scenes and richly detailed characters, the author captures and holds the readers interest.
