About This Item

New York, New York: Grosset & Dunlap, 1939. First Thus . Hardcover. Very Good/Good. The book that launched Grey's career as one of the most prolific Western writers of all time, this is the story of a young "half Indian-half Spanish" girl who escapes from a colony of Mormons to avoid a hated marriage, ending up in Arizona in an intense love affair with a young invalid from the East who has sought the curative properties of the desert air. "Certain types of Mormons are presented from an altogether original point of view, & human nature without the veneer of civilization is portrayed with telling force." Orig. published in 1910, this is a Photoplay edition issued with the release of the 1939 Paramount Pictures film, & includes a glossy frontispiece + 1 other black-and-white still photos from the movie. In 298 pages + 12 pages of publisher's ads for other book series in rear. With gray cloth-covered boards stamped with a brown & blue image & brown lettering to front & spine, this 12mo hardcover is in VG condition: exceptionally clean & bright, binding strong & straight, pages moderately tanned, heavier around edges, but completely supple. Significant rubbing to upper & lower extremities, heaviest at corners & spine tips. The unclipped DJ is downgraded to Poor because it is missing most of the spine; but the front & rear images are largely intact & colorful; nicely protected in new mylar cover free! Our photos depict the Exact book you will receive from us, never "stock" images of books we don't actually have! All orders processed before 2 pm weekdays (PST) ship same day; later orders, weekends & holidays ship very next business day.

Synopsis

From the book:BUT the man's almost dead. The words stung John Hare's fainting spirit into life. He opened his eyes. The desert still stretched before him, the appalling thing that had overpowered him with its deceiving purple distance. Near by stood a sombre group of men. Leave him here, said one, addressing a gray-bearded giant. "He's the fellow sent into southern Utah to spy out the cattle thieves. He's all but dead. Dene's out-laws are after him. Don't cross Dene." The stately answer might have come from a Scottish Covenanter or a follower of Cromwell. Martin Cole, I will not go a hair's-breadth out of my way for Dene or any other man. You forget your religion. I see my duty to God.

Reviews

On Apr 9 2020, a reader said:
John Hare has come west to regain his health and to find his place in life only to be branded "Dene's spy" and becomes a hunted man. For me is the best western Zane Grey ever wrote. Combines all that one has come to know in the genre.
