About This Item

Alnwick; J. Catnach, 1807., 1807. Hard Cover. SECOND EDITION with waterfall vignette to p. x and without half-title. Large paper copy. Quarto, pp. 102. 13 illustrations of which 3 plates designed by Mr Craig including frontispiece and others within text, engraved on wood by Thomas Bewick. Polished half-calf with 5 raised bands, gilt titles to maroon and black labels to spine and gilt floral decoration to compartments, pebbled cloth-covered boards. Calf very slightly scuffed. Endpapers lightly foxed with bookplate of Geo. Skelly, the noted Bewick collector, to front paste-down, very similar though not identical to the Bewick blank plate to p. 263 "Bookplates by Beilby & Bewick". Title page and subsequent dedication leaf and pp. 71-74 lightly corner creased; small indentation to upper margin throughout. A Very Good copy in handsome binding. Bestselling publication in verse by Percy, the Bishop of Dromore, still being printed in 1847. The wood engravings were of limited monetary benefit to Bewick, who had been obliged to visit Craig in London for the illustrations, and had incurred associated expenses which it is doubtful were ever recovered. Tattersfield, Nigel: Thomas Bewick The Complete Illustrative Work, pp. 286-288 & Tattersfield, Nigel: Bookplates by Beilby & Bewick p.263.
