London: Constable, 1939. The high sheriff is suspected of murdering the man who was blackmailing him, threatening to reveal an act of cowardice during World War I. Second printing. Bumped and rubbed with wear at the corners, loss to the spine heel, and a tear the entire length of the rear gutter. Hinges slightly loose, previous owner's name on the front pastedown. Jacket rubbed with chips and tears, detached at the spine. Spine tanned with the upper third missing and loss to the heel, several pieces of browning scotch tape holding it together. Price clipped, in Brodart.. Hard Cover. Fair/Poor.
