Hughes's first and most famous novel, A High Wind in Jamaica was "an immediate best-seller", which "seeks to explode, by means of irony, the Romantic literary tradition of the child as essentially innocent, which had become decadent in the popular Victorian novel" (ODNB). This copy contains a loosely inserted leaf from a 1982 Blackwell's catalogue listing it for sale. The book was originally published in America a few months before under the title The Innocent Voyage. Octavo. Original green cloth, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, covers panelled in blind. With dust jacket and Book Society wraparound band. Newspaper review of Penelope Hughes's biography of her father mounted to front pastedown. Faint browning to endpapers, paperclip indentations with slight rustmarks to front free endpaper and three following leaves, slight foxing to edges; minor toning and foxing to jacket, several small nicks to extremities, unclipped; wraparound with faint foxing and short closed tear: a very good copy in near-fine jacket and wraparound.
Synopsis
Richard Hughes’ A High Wind in Jamaica is the first of only three novels the author published in his lifetime. The novel tells the story of an English family, the Bas-Thorntons, living in late 19th century colonial Jamaica. When the “high wind” of a hurricane hits the island, Mr. and Mrs. Bas-Thornton decide to send their five children back to England ahead of their own return. From there, adventure ensues. In following the experiences of the children almost exclusively, Hughes takes a highly original approach into the relationship of power between adults and children. Because of this, A High Wind in Jamaica has been referred to as one of the best book for adults about children. It is also ranked 71st on Modern Library’s “100 Best” English-language novels of the 20th century.
