Contemporary mottled calf professionally rebacked to style. Some browning and staining, most noticeable to start of first volume. 'Henry was for many years a voluminous contributor to the Gentleman's Magazine. This set of collected voyages is introduced by an admirable summary of all the voyages, undertaken for discovery only, in both the southern and northern hemispheres in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. The work is especially important for its inclusion of the early circumnavigators who had not published their own accounts' (Hill). Much of the work is devoted to Cook's first voyage and it includes accounts of Drake, Cavendish, Cowley, Dampier, Cooke, Rogers, Anson, Byron, Wallis and Carteret and Bougainville. The final volume contains the first printing of the anonymous account of the Phipps expedition, the official account of which was printed in the following year. sabin, 54897, Hill,800.
