About This Item

New York City: Pudney & Russell Early days in Richmond County, GA, which encompasses the city of Augusta, are recalled through a mixture of colorful tales and factual data in this 66 page booklet, reprinted from two rare books: the Rev. George White's Historical Collections of Georgia and Georgia, a Guide to Its Towns and Countryside, a WPA publication. The spiral-bound booklet is printed one-sided on 60# paper with the print enlarged for easier reading.A vinyl sheet has been added to protect the three-color cover. The excerpt from White's book covers the development of this area until the publication date of 1854, while excerpts from the WPA book, give a nostalgic glympse from a 1940 vantage point, including interesting historical notes, especially as they relate to sightseeing possibilities. Among the many and diverse topics in the booklet are: the Yazoo Freshet of 1840; Early Churches of Augusta; 1850 Census extracts; Longevity, including a woman who supposedly lived to age 140; Petition seeking help against Indian Uprisings, signed by 18 early settlers in 1756; Documents professing loyalty to the King in 1774, with many signatures; Augusta in the Revolution and the Cruelties of Col. Brown; Radification of the Constitution with signatures; Revolutionary War Memos between General Pickens and Colonel Lee for the Americans and Colonel Browne for England, concerning prisoners and surrender; a Visit from General George Washington; Distinguished men -- Col. Samuel Hammond, Augustus Christian George Elholm; General Thomas Glascock, Charles J. Jenkins, and other interesting bits of history and trivia. . Limited Edition Reprint. Spiral/Comb .
