A lovely third edition copy of 'The History and Antiquities of the Deanery of Craven in the County of York' by the noted English clergyman and topographer, Thomas Dunham Whitaker. This copy is edited by Alfred William Whitehead Morant, with a chapter on the 'Geology, Natural History and Pre-Historic Antiquities' by the English palaeontologist, biologist and academic, Louis Compton Miall. Copiously illustrated throughout, with: A portrait frontispiece of Thomas Dunham Whitaker, with a decorative pictorial half-title page. Three maps, one of which is folding. Four 'Ground Plans' Eighty plates, twenty nine of which are folding plates, of family trees and sketches. This copy also features 'Directions to the Binder' to the verso of the final page of the text. In a quarter black cloth binding with blue cloth covered boards. Externally, very smart. Slightly bumped and rubbed to extremities. Very slight rubbing to spine. Handling marks and rubbing to board, more severe to rear. Very small closed tear to fore edge of front free-endpaper. Very small loss to fore edge of half title page. Very faint offsetting half title page. Internally, firmly bound. Pages very bright and clean throughout, with the odd light handling mark. Handling mark to fore edge, page 7. Faint spotting to page 19, not affecting text. Small closed tear to gutter of folding plates facing page 32, 93, 96, 106, and 238. Offsetting from plates to pages 52, 105, 258, and 481. Large tear to folding plate to recto of page 96, and plate facing page 194. Small closed tear to fore edge, page 137. Tape repair to plate facing page 514. Very Good Indeed
