New York: James D. Torrey, 1861. Book. Good-VG. Original Cloth. 1st Edition. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Complete in two (2) volumes, as originally issued in 1861 (Vols. III and IV published later), uniformly bound in original brown cloth, decorated in blind, with gilt stamped eagle on each front cover and gilt lettering and decoration on each spine panel. Set shows wear but is intact in all essentials, showing rubbing with some exposure at several corners, mild spotting to lower front cover of Vol. I, discoloration/dye lightening extending in a thin area (1/4" to 1" wide) down 3/4 of front cover, mild sunning/fading to spine panels. Repair evident to front hinge of Vol. I, all other hinges intact. Text block edges toned by age, interiors respectably clean and intact, with a few scattered soil marks. viii,531 + viii,537 pp., illus. w/ hand-colored tissue-paper map of Colton's United States following p. 2 (Vol. I). each volume w/ engraved frontis. and main title. One of the first Civil War histories, here in very solid Good condition, conservatively evaluated, not quite VG..

The Saucony Book Shop, located in the heart of scenic rural Berks County, epicenter of Pennsylvania German folk culture (our shop specialty), offers a full range of gently used, rare, and antiquarian books, with many volumes of scholarly merit and an unabashed emphasis on the quaint, the curious, and the utterly obscure. We make no attempt to be a general-service book shop. Our inventory is highly selective, individually chosen from among the hundreds of thousands of books to which we have access annually at auctions, library and estate sales, and through individual scouts and vendors. We do not handle material that does not meet our expectations in terms of condition or interest to our specialized, idiosyncratic customers. Despite maintaining a browsing inventory of more than 15,000 volumes, we have minimized our carbon footprint by maintaining our entire operation in a cozy ca. 1890 barn and lean-to adjacent to an historic creamery in rural Maxatawny Township.
