About This Item
London: Longmans, Green, and Co, 1900. Leather. Very Good. 7" by 4.5". None. A popular edition of James Anthony Froude's detailed history of England from around the years 1530 to 1588, looking in detail at the reigns of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. A popular edition of this work. Complete in twelve volumes. An extensively detailed history of England from around 1530 to 1588. The author worked on this series for over twenty years, extensively researching. He worked from original manuscripts from the Record Office and Hatfield House. The series is known for its dramatic writing, rather than being a scientific analysis of history. The author also defended the English Reformation, and focussed heavily on the figures of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. When published, the work was a success, though it did receive some criticism from publications such as the 'Christian Remembrancer' and the 'Edinburgh Review'. Volume VII is lacking the half-title. Written by James Anthony Froude, a historian, novelist, and the editor of the 'Fraser's Magazine'. This was his best known work, and led to him becoming the best known historian of his time. Undated, dated from Jisc from a copy held at the University of Leeds Library. Bookplate to the front pastedowns, 'F. W. Egerton, Cheriton', though misplaced to the rear pastedowns of some volumes. Prior owner's ink inscription to the verso to the front endpaper of Volume I, 'Mary Egerton from Cowper Xmas 90'. In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, generally smart. Light spotting to the boards. Minor rubbing to the boards and spines. Front hinges of Volumes II, VII, X, and XII starting but firm. Bookplates to the front pastedowns, misplaced to the rear pastedowns of some volumes. Prior owner's ink inscription to the verso to the front endpaper of Volume I. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with a couple of spots to the endpapers. Volume VII is lacking the half-title. Closed tear to page v/vi of Volume VII. Very Good
