The Albany edition of Thomas Babington Macaulay's historical account of late seventeenth century England. With frontispieces selected by the Director of the National Portrait Gallery. Alongside Macaulays confident and dramatic prose, The History of England is known for its progressive conception of history, often called the Whig interpretation of history. As he describes the events of the seventeen year period from 1685 to 1702, incorporating the reign of James II, the Glorious Revolution, and the coregency of William of Orange and Mary II, Macaulay argues that England overcame superstition and autocracy to create a balanced constitution Lord Macaulay was a British historian and Whig politician, who served as War Secretary between 1839 and 1841. With a gilt stamp from Radley College to both front and rear boards of all six volumes. Prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedown of volume I. The set used to belong to Admiral Charles Henry Lawrence Woodhouse who became Commander-in-Chief of the East Indies in 1948. With the Woodhouse family motto, 'in hoc signo', meaning 'In this sign thou shalt conquer'. Prize bookplate from Radley School to N.D. Williams to the recto of the front free endpaper of volume I. Radley school, formerly called St. Peter's college, is an independent boys boarding school in Oxfordshire. Book binders stamp from 'Bickers & Sons' in Leicester Square to the verso of the front endpaper. In a tree calf binding. Externally, generally lovely, with a scuff in the front board of volume I, and a scuff in the rear board to volume V. The spine is a little rubbed near the head of volume V. Internally, firmly bound. Aside from some scattered foxing to the fore edge of volume I, and some light foxing to the endpapers, pages are bright and clean. Near Fine
