About This Item

Mineola, New York, U.S.A.: Dover Publications, Inc, 1979. Trade Paperback. Very Good. 5 1/2" x 8 1/2. 543 Pages (pages 821-1364) Indexed. Some minor front cover edge and corner wear. Otherwise a tight bright book with no marks or stamps. From May 1804 to September 1806 Lewis and Clark undertook one of the great adventures of modern man. Their government-sponsored exploration of the wilderness between the Mississippi River and the Pacific covered, in total miles, a distance equal to one-third the circumference of the earth and took its participants through what is now Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska, Washington State, South Dakota, Montana, Idaho, and Oregon. It was an epoch-making expedition through one of the most magnificent geographical areas of the world. It is America's national epic. Both men proved themselves not only intrepid pioneers, but acute observers and top-flight journalists. But the world had to wait years for the story. In 1814 a personal narrative pieced together by Nicholas Biddle finally appeared. But only with the appearance, in 1893, of the four-volume Elliott Coues edition was the story finally told in such a way as to be both a thrilling narrative and an invaluable document for students of Americana. This Vol.III Dover Edition is an unaltered and unabridged republication of the edition published by Francis P. Harper in 1893. Five illustrations and the Index are appended to this Dover Volume III. The remaining illustrations are arranged on large plates at the end of Volumes I and II. This Volume III contains the last thirteen chapters, 25 through 37: Botany and Zoology, Homeward Bound on Columbian Tide-Water, The Columbia from Sandy River to the Dalles, The Columbia From the Dalles to Wallawalla River, Overland East of the Columbia and along the Koos-Kooskee to Commearp Creek, Camp Chopunnish on the Upper Koos-Kooskee, Again in the Bitter-Root Mountains, Division fo the Expedition Captain Lewis' Exploration of the Big Blackfoot and Maria's Rivers, Captain Lewis' Exploration of Maria's River, Captain Clark Proceeds to Explore the Yellowstone, Captain Clark Descends the Yellowstone, Down the Missouri From the Little Missouri to White River, and Lastly (Chapter 37) The Expedition Returns safely to St. Louis. Plus Four Appendices: Essay on an Indian Policy, Estimate of the Western Indians, Summary Statement, and Meterological Register.
