About This Item
Lowndes County was created from Irwin County in 1825. This history details its formation and gives a brief look at the early history of the entire territory. Early military history is outlined including rosters of the militia, an account of the Creek Wars, and military records from 1848 through 1851. Militia rosters and company rolls for the Civil War are included. Chapters also deal with Lowndes Countians during World War I including rosters of veterans. The political history of the county is covered with lists of county officials. Educational development is included as well as developments in music and the arts. Chapters deal with agriculture, religion, brief sketches of smaller towns in the county, city government of Valdosta from 1877, and the economic development of the county. Civic and social organizations are recorded. There are brief biographical sketches of early physicians and attorneys. Over 6500 names are recorded in the listings of the U.S. Census for Lowndes County in the years 1830, 1840, and 1850. Additionally, the 1850 Census records the age, sex, and state of birth of the individual listed. A new name index has been included in this reprint edition.
