London: Cassell and Company Ltd, 1895. First edition. Leather. Very Good. 11" by 8.5". None. An illustrated first edition of this history of the character "Punch" and his writing. First edition. Illustrated throughout with numerous in-text drawings and full-page photographs. A study of "Punch" with chapters including: early progress and vicissitudes, Punch's jokes, cartoonist and their work, attack, and counter-attack. Written by Marion Harry Alexander Spielmann, a prolific Victorian art critic and scholar, best known for his history of Punch, the first biography of John Everett Millais, and a detailed investigation into the evidence for portraits of William Shakespeare. In the original full red morocco binding with gilt and marbled pastedowns and endpapers. Externally, very smart with light rubbing to the extremities, fading to the spine and a tide mark to the rear board. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean. Previous owner's bookplate to front pastedown. Very Good
