About This Item

Bay City Genealogy Wpa Pitcher Indians, 1858. Early days in Saginaw County, Michigan, plus Bay City which is now in Bay County, are recalled in this new 48-page booklet titled: Saginaw County, Michigan, USA. The spiral-bound booklet is compiled from two hard to find sources: the 1858 History of Saginaw County by Truman B. Fox, and Michigan, a Guide to the Wolverine State, a 1941 product of the WPA Writer's Program. The tri-color cover is printed on 80# card stock and protected with a vinyl sheet. The text is printed on 8.5" x 11" 60# opaque paper. Among the subjects included in Fox's book are: History of the area from 1822, when troups were stationed "where Saginaw City now stands for the purpose of protecting the fur trade and watching the movements of the Indians" with a detailed acount by Z. Pitcher; the Saginaw Indians and their leader "a miserable tyrant and a villainous coward" named Kish-kaw-ko; Physical description of the area, including the various rivers, timber, wild fruits, minerals, salines; Business interests, including the fur trade, fish trade, lumbering, shipping, etc.; Major towns, including directories of businesses, lawyers and doctors -- Saginaw City, East Saginaw, and Bay City (now in Bay County); Other communities -- Portsmouth, Bangor, Zilwaukie, St. Charles, Chessening, Bridgeport Center, Frankenmuth, and Green Point; "Indian Payment in Old Times," "Legend of the Lone Tree," and other interesting bits of history and trivia. Excerpts from the WPA book, include a section on the city of Saginaw, with 9 Points of Interest, a city map, and a picture of East Genesse St., along with brief stops at other towns. Although perhaps out of date as a tour book, these WPA guides are rich in history and trivia. . Limited Edition Reprint. Spiral/Comb . New/No Jacket. 8.5" x 11". Private Press.
