Edinburgh: William Blackwood and Sons, 1867-1870. Cloth. Good. 9" by 6". None. A complete seven volume set on the history of Scotland from the Roman period to the Revolution. Seven volumes. A history of Scotland written by John Hill Burton, a Scottish advocate, historian and economist who served as secretary of the Scottish Prison Board from 1854 to 1877 and Historiographer Royal from 1867 to 1881. Volume one contains an account of Scotland from the Roman Period, through early Christianity, and to the end of the reign of Alexander I. Volume two contains an account from Agricola's invasion, through the War of Independence, and to the death of Robert Bruce. Volume three contains an account from the accession of the House of Stewart, through James II, III, IV, and V, to the regency of Arran. Volume four contains an account from the Reformation to the reign of Queen Mary. Volume five contains an account from the organisation of the church, through the regencies of Murray and Morton, to the league with England. Volume six contains an account from the death of Queen Mary, through the Spanish Armada and the union of the crowns, to the accession of Charles I. Volume seven contains an account from the reign of Charles I, through the organisation of the Commonwealth and the Restoration, to the revolution. Publisher's advertisements to the rear of volume one. In the original red cloth binding. Externally, smart with light shelf wear and rubbing to the extremities. The odd mark to the board and tide marks to boards from volume four to seven. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with the odd handling mark only. Previous owner's bookplate to front pastedown. Bookseller's label to front pastedown of a few volumes. Good
