Halifax, N.S.: Morton & Co., Provincial Book Store, 1893. First Edition First Printing . Hardcover. Fair/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Octavo. 260 pages, indexed. Hardcover bound in red cloth with cover lettering and rules in gilt. The binding is rubbed and worn, and the fore edges of both covers have been damped. Inner hinges secure. Endpapers foxed, and the front flyleaf has a couple of prior owners' signatures. The text is toned and has a few stains as well as some browning on two pages where a piece of ephemera had been laid in loosely (now laid in at the front of the book). Frontis portrait of the author; no other illustrations.

A sound copy with secure inner hinges. There is damping in the gutter at the front near the top and the bottom. This is heavy at the very front and fades through the Introduction. There is also a little damping at the top edge of the rear endpapers which does not affect the text. A sound copy. There is a two-page Index at the rear.

The binding is worn and bumped, and the spine ends are chipped. Bottom corner bumped and creased. Scuffing along the fore edge of the front cover. A sound copy. The text is toned. The two leaves for pages 63-66 have large creases at the top right, affecting the text. Signed by an officer on the front cover. Signed "A. F. Kingman" who is listed in the rear of the book as 2nd Lt / 1st Lt. Capt. Early markings (presumably by Kingman), have pencil notations in the list of names, some marginal notes reading "KIA" for those killed in action. Scarce.

Cincinnati: Published for Subscribers / Whetstone & Buxton, Printers, 1829. Hardcover. Fair. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Octavo. 610 pages. Hardcover bound in original full leather. The binding is quite worn but holding. Front hinge is heavily rubbed and is starting. The spine is slightly curved inward. Marbled endpapers. Front flyleaf a little loosened. Outside edges of the text block show heavy wear. The text is foxed but the text block is sound. Illustrated with 6 engraved plates, including a folding frontis plate (HALF OF THE FOLDING FRONTIS IS MISSING). This book was reprinted throughout several years, and most copies appear to have some plates missing or no plates at all. We have not seen any copies with more than 6 plates, but some later printings appear to have some plates (Alexander Hamilton and Nathaneal Greene) which do not appear in this edition. No author is given on the title page, but this work is attributed to Amos Blanchard.

The period one book has a gouge to the fore-edge of the rear board. The period two book has a dark stain mark at the top of the front board. All edges of text blocks are gilt. The gilt is dulled, Marbled endpapers. Text has light toning. Some pages are smudged. Photographs throughout.
