United Kingdom. 1648. 339, 349-510 pgs. Engraved title page. Second Edition, Enlarged. Bound in 1/2 contemporary leather boards with yellow paper covered boards and raised bands and title present to the spine. Boards have light shelf-wear present present to the extremities. No ownership marks present. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. The Holy State and The Profane State, Fuller's celebrated studies in virtue and viceâ ""the most popular and characteristic of all his books" (ODNB) â "provides rule of conduct, offering as exemplars a rich collection of model characters, along with short biographies of historical figures from Queen Elizabeth and Sir Francis Drake to St. Augustine and Joan of Arc. Allibone calls it, "Perhaps . . . The best of his works; and certainly [it] displays to better advantage than any his original and vigorous powers of thinking." The Holy State and the Profane State (Prophane in the original, sometimes shortened to The Holy State) is a 1642 book by English churchman and historian Thomas Fuller. It describes the holy state as existing in the family and in public life, gives rules of conduct, model "characters" for the various professions and profane biographies. It was perhaps the most popular of Fuller's writings, having been reprinted four times after the first run sold out. EB; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .
