About This Item
Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1912. Hardcover. Illustrations by F.C. Yohn. Small 8vo. Brown blind-embossed cloth with gilt lettering. viii, 606pp. Tissue-guarded color frontispiece, three full-page color plates. Very good. Small inoffensive stain at rear board corner slightly touching upon gutter corner of pages 550-606. A tight and nice first edition of this bestselling novel by the prolific Indiana writer and poet (1866-1947) who on the side was a diplomat who served as U.S. Minister to Paraguay (1933-35), Venezuela (1935-38) and Nicaragua (1938-41). Choice addition: Tipped to front flyleaf is a heavy stock 4 3/4" X 2¼" card boldly inscribed and signed by the author in black ink: "Witness my hand! / Meredith Nicholson / Indianapolis / May / 1922." Together with James Whitcomb Riley, Booth Tarkington and George Ade, this quartette created a surprising Golden Age for this state's literary output in the late 19th/early 20th century.
