About This Item
London: Longman and Co.; T. Cadell; J. Richardson, et al, 1838. Cloth. Very Good. 9" by 5.5". None. An early nineteenth century edition of this Christian work concerning the scriptures and St Paul by theologian William Paley. From the Widdrington library, Newton Hall, with a pencil shelfmark to the front free-endpaper, and the ink signature of S. F. Jacson to the front pastedown. "In Horae Paulinae Paley showed he was thoroughly versed in St Paul's teachings, to which he applied a good deal of original criticism. He mounted a detailed comparison between Paul's epistles and the Acts of the Apostles, concluding that the similarities between the two reinforced the authenticity of the testimony they contained. In so doing he demonstrated that Paul's letters were not the contrived product of a personal or political agenda but rather were an authentic source of early Christian history" -DNB. In the original publisher's binding. Externally, some bumping, with slight loss to the spine label. The joints are just starting. Internally, firmly bound, with light intermittent spots, and slight browning to the top margin. Very Good
