About This Item

London: Jonathan Cape, 1963. First edition. Cloth. Very Good Indeed/Good. 7.5" by 5". Raymond Hawkey. A well presented first edition of the spy novel succeeding Len Deighton's The Ipcress File. This is a first edition of the work, in smart red cloth binding with a decorative stamp motif to the front board and gilt to the spine. In original dust wrapper with decorative, crossword endpapers. Len Deighton is a British author known for his novels on espionage and military history. He has written a number of works on The Cold War and World War Two, including this one and The Ipcress File, which has since been adapted into a popular film. This particular novel is the second in the series featuring the unnamed secret agent working for the British intelligence agency. This work follows The Ipcress File with two further novels, Funeral in Berlin and Billion Dollar Brain following Horse Under Water in the series. As with the other novels, Horse Under Water has an intricate plot with many false leads and plot twists. In a striking dust wrapper designed by English graphic designer and author, Raymond Hawkey.Lacking the crossword insert to the rear. In original publisher's cloth binding with the original dust wrapper. Externally, excellent, with light bumping to the extremities. The odd pen mark to front endpapers and slight loss to the rear paste down. Dust wrapper is smart, with light edgewear and the occasional chip. Tape reinforcing the wrap to the reverse of the spine and to the rear flap. Age toning and sunning to the wrap, mainly to the edges, with the odd mark. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean. Lacking the crossword insert to the rear. Very Good Indeed

Synopsis

The dead hand of a long-defeated Nazi Third Reich reaches out to Portugal, London and Marrakech in Deighton's second novel, featuring the same anonymous narrator and milieu of The IPCRESS File, but finds Dawlish now head of the secret British Intelligence unit, WOOC(P).The Ipcress File was a debut sensation. Here in the second Secret File, Horse under Water, skin-diving, drug trafficking and blackmail all feature in a curious story in which the dead hand of a long-defeated Hitler-Germany reaches out to Portugal, London and Marrakech, and to all the neo-Nazis of today's Europe. The detail is frightening but unfaultable; the story as up to date as ever it was. The un-named hero of The Ipcress File the same: insolent, fallible, capricious - in other words, human. But he must draw on all his abilities, good and bad, when plunged into a story of murder, betrayal and greed every bit as murky as the waters off the coast of Portugal, where the answers lie buried.
