About This Item

Chicago: Star Publishing Company, 1896. Fifth Edition -- Illustrated. Hardcover. Good+. 8vo. Pp. 339. Introduction by Rev. Frank W. Gunsaulus, DD, LLD. Frontis. illustration of Whitman leaving for his winter ride. With 16 additional illustrations. Fold-out map. Hinges starting, a bit. Bound in green cloth with gilt title on front cover and spine. Cover a bit rubbed and dulled, with wear to corners. Despite detracting qualities, a quite presentable copy. Please see photo. Nixon, who died in 1905, jumped on the bandwagon to support the forces promoting Henry Spalding's Senate Document that memorialized the Whitman-Saved-Oregon legend. Nixon wrote this book as "swag" for a Whtiman College fundraising campaign. Despite the rash writing (written in one month (!), per Clifford Drury), this book became the bedrock of Whitman literature for an entire generation.

Laid-in this copy is a 1964 brochure titled "Whitman Mission" published by the US Department of the Interior, one-sheet folded into five panels, printed verso and recto. SMITH, 7328. SOLIDAY III, 566.
