Description

Vantage Press, 1987. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. 265 pages. Vantage Press was probably the largest vanity press before self-published authors turned to print-on-demand technology. This is the rare Vantage Press title that is taken seriously in its field. Crelin was the leading neo-natal anatomist and a Yale professor. Crelin explores the development of the human vocal tract with the vocal track of other hominid species in order to understand the range of sounds that might have been possible. Extensively illustrated with photographs and diagrams. First edition (first printing). Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Inscribed by the author on the front pastedown, 'July 19, 1991, Best Wishes to Stephen Jay Gould! Ed Crelin.' *** From the Harvard office library of the paleontologist and leading advocate for evolution, Stephen Jay Gould. With a posthumous tipped in bookplate indicating the provenance. *** Intellectually, Gould understood the true nature of these bookplates, but the book collector in him appreciated them. In his essay 'A Seahorse for All Races' Gould writes about one of his prized possessions, a book from Charles Dickens' library: 'Dickens made no annotations, but a bookplate on the cover, presumably inserted as a come-on for a sale after Dickens' death in 1870, does prove that [he] kept and shelved the book.' *** We offer our Gould bookplates, printed letterpress in two colors, in the same spirit.
