HINDUS - Octavo, indigo blue cloth titled with a vignette in white on the front cover. The covers are rubbed and much of the title is rubbed away from the front cover. The head of the darkened spine is worn and the title is rubbed away from the spine. iv & 301 pages, plus 2 pages of ads, with a frontispiece and 25 illustrations on 15 plates plus 2 folding maps at the rear. A few signatures are lightly pulled. Very good. <p>First edition.<p>Inscribed in the year of publication & signed by Vilhjalmur Stefansson to the Russian-American writer Maurice G. Hindus.<p>Born in Belarus, Maurice Hindus (1891-1969) came to America with his mother and siblings and settled in New York City. He worked as a farm laborer while attending High School in North Brookfield. He earned a degree in literature from Colgate University and lectured on Russia on the Chautaugua circuit. He published his first book "The Russian Peasant and the Revolution" in 1920 and wrote articles about Russian emigres. He went back to Russia several times and spent three years there during the second World War. His book "Mother Russia" is an account of wartime conditions there. His 1953 book "Crisis in the Kremlin" presents Russian peasants in a sympathetic light.
