About This Item
Parigi; Paris: Baudry, 1828. Leather. Near Fine. 7" by 4". None. A beautiful and excellently bound copy of the fourth edition of the famous novel 'I Promessi Sposi', a historical novel by the Italian Alessandro Manzoni. The fourth edition of this work. Complete in three volumes. In Italian. In a signed binding by Joyce & Co, with a binders label to the front pastedowns. 'I Promessi Sposi', or 'The Betrothed', is a historical novel, set in northern Italy in 1628. Those years saw the oppressive Spanish rule, and the novel is often considered to be a veiled attack on the Austrian Empire, as it controlled the region when the novel was first published in 1842. The novel has also been noted in the past due to its description of the 1630 plague in Milan, a very intense and remarkable description. This work is considered one of the masterpieces of world literature. Written by Alessandro Manzoni, an Italian novelist and poet, who is best known for this work. He contributed to the stabilization of the modern Italian language, and language unity throughout Italy, as well as being an advocate for Liberal Catholicism. In a full calf binding. Externally, smart. Small amount of loss of leather to the front board of Volume III, and a very small amount of loss to the front board of Volume II. Some light marks to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with the odd spot. Small tidemark to the head of the first few pages of Volume II. Near Fine
