'I Promessi Sposi', or 'The Betrothed', is a historical novel, set in northern Italy in 1628. Those years saw the oppressive Spanish rule, and the novel is often considered to be a veiled attack on the Austrian Empire, as it controlled the region when the novel was first published in 1842. The novel has also been noted in the past due to its description of the 1630 plague in Milan, a very intense and remarkable description.
