London: Ward and Lock, n.d., ca. 1870s. First Edition. Octavo (20.5cm.); removed; 160pp.; illus., text in double columns. Title page (serving as upper cover) slightly chipped, textblock a bit toned, else Very Good and sound, albeit lacking original wrappers. Diverse collection of anecdotes, advice, and jokes for the railroad passenger, covering such topics as the correct way of eating olives ("it being /comme il faut/ to use the fingers for that purpose," (p. 27)); and the statistics of bachelorism ("Bachelors henpecked by their housekeepers, 3185; pestered by legacy-hunting relatives, 1796; devoured by ennui and selfish cares, 2064...happy, none," (p. 118)).
