About This Item

Memmingen (Bavaria): Edition Curt Visel, 1973     ¶ AN ORIGINAL LINOCUT SIGNED BY THE ARTIST, depicting a man imprisoned in a tower or pergola surmounted by a giant octopus, set in a volcanic wasteland relieved only by a peacock lower right. The accompanying text, interestingly, omits Rimbaud's last line -- "Ce n'est rien! j'y suis! j'y suis toujours" (It's nothing! I'm here! I'm still here) -- which is perhaps to be understood from the illustration itself. This print was originally issued as a supplement (Beilage) to the German graphic-arts periodical Illustration 63: Zeitschrift für die Buchillustration (1964-    ).   ||| Collation: In 2 (260 x 200 mm): Two leaves, paginated [1-4] (ie, not paginated).  A bifolium of machine-made wove paper, unmarked, loose as issued.  Contents: [1] linocut (202 x 156 mm) printed in black, signed "Strauchmann" in pencil lower right; [2] imprint, as above; [3] blank; [4] text: six quatrains of verse, in French, headed "Arthur Rimbaud".  References: Cf LCCN 80641496, OCLC 2673241. Not in SMSU/StAubyn (1986).  Provenance: Paul Dufrasne, of Berlin, an original subscriber.   ||| For further details please contact Jay Dillon  Rare Books + Manuscripts, as below.  Pour plus de détails, veuillez contacter Jay Dillon  Rare Books + Manuscripts, comme ci-dessous..

About Jay Dillon Rare Books + Manuscripts

Jay Dillon Rare Books + Manuscripts is a private, research-intensive rare-book dealer of forty years' experience in and around New York, specialized in exceptional books, manuscripts, and cultural property. Jay Dillon has been responsible for selling or appraising more than $100 million worth of books and manuscripts spanning some three thousand years. In 1989 Jay Dillon was the editor and principal author of a richly annotated catalogue that was hailed in the English press as one of the ten best books -- of any kind -- published that year. In 1994 he was invited to narrate the Discovery Channel program on the history of monopoly; and four years later he was consulted by the Zapruder family in connection with their famous film of the assassination of President Kennedy -- which, as it turned out, Mr Dillon valued more accurately than any other appraiser. The firm maintains a wide and productive network of relationships both among private collectors and in the trade; and we are currently engaged in building a number of outstanding private collections for our clients. Books and manuscripts offered to the public are mainly duplicates from our clients' libraries, or otherwise surplus to their needs. Our appraisal services include formal appraisals for insurance, estate-settlement, and tax purposes. For details please contact Dillonbook@AOL.com.
