About This Item
Quality Book Club, 1978. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. h/b 280 pages, condition is very good. Harold Hobson, former Drama Critic of the Sunday Times, regards his life as an Indirect Journey because he only finaily realized his greatest ambition - a Fellowship at Oxford - through his successful and distinguished career as a critic, a secondary ambition which, he says, was thrust upon him. Despite being partially crippled at the age of seven, the author's vivid recollections of his Yorkshire childhood among miners and artisans, and of his celebrated undergraduate contemporaries are full of irony and charm. He describes, too, his astonishing career, his exceptionally happy marriage, the joys and difficulties of travel, the numerous significant plans and performances he has seen, and the many famous theatrical personalities he has known over the years, including Gielgud, Olivier, Ashcroft, Guiness and Barrault. Not only do the memoirs of this brilliant and courageous man make highly entertaining reading but they also provide a fascinating record of the theatre this century.
