About This Item

U S A: Holt, Rinehart and Winston, 1967. Hardback. Previous owners name to inside cover. Slight foxing to edge. Shelf wear to edges of D/J. This book is a scholarly and easily readable text covering the various copncepts of linguistic form from the greeks to Chomsky. Professor Dinneen's premise for the text is that our knowledge of languages increases as we are able to clearly distinguish units of language at different levels, for stated purposes; and as we can understand and show the relationships between these units. The work of both traditional grammarians and modern linguists is summarized and related, and both structural conceptions and descriptive procedures are discussed. The text presents successive works on language historically to reveal the general conditions under which progress has been - and will be - made. An appreciation of the 'structure of language' is developed by showing the differing and evolving concepts of the subject. A humanistic appraisal of linguistic science has been attempted by a thoughtful analysis of the relationship between the predominant intellectual atmosphere of a period and the contemporary work on language. 452 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions etc.). First Edition. Cloth. Very Good/Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Harback.
