Illustrated with a frontispiece and 25 full page engravings. 8vo, publishers original gray cloth, the spine with designed lettering in gilt, the upper cover pictorially decorated and with designed lettering in white, black and gray. xiv, [2], 330 pp. A very handsome copy, sometime expertly refurbished. FIRST EDITION AND A PIONEERING WORK OF CONSERVATION. Holder argues for protected status for elephants and an end to the ivory trade as the only way to prevent their eventual extinction. Holder moved to Pasadena in the 1880's eventually becoming an expert in marine life and especially the fishes and fishing in Pacific waters.
