First edition thus. 4to. 11" x 8 1/2" pictorial, stiff wrappers, 551-711 pp. (48 pp.), preface, double column, illustrated. A facsimile reprint of Harper's New Monthly Magazine, Vol. XXIX, Number CLXXIII, October, 1864, and Vol. XXIX, Number CLXXIV, November, 1864 for the second part. Laid-in to this copy is a typed letter on Tombstone Epitaph stationery and dated Nov. 24, 1971, that says in part, "I am particularly fond of some of J. Ross Browne's writings and drawings on early Western subjects, and as a result have reprinted this copy from a fairly good copy of Harper's New Monthly Magazine." Evidence of two paper clip marks at top of front cover else a fine copy.
