About World of Books Ltd West Sussex, United Kingdom

Biblio member since 2007

In 2002, World of Books was founded on an ethos to do good, protect the planet, and support charities by enabling more goods to be reused. Since then, we've grown into a global pioneer, dedicated to helping people read more and waste less. Through the World of Books brand, customers can now buy and sell with us! We provide affordable, preloved books to book lovers all around the world, while also giving people the opportunity to contribute to the circular economy, earn money and protect the planet by trading in their unwanted books and media for cash. Through the B2B side of our business we've developed technology to help charities sell in bulk, meaning they can clear much needed floor space and make money for great causes at the same time. A new book will be sold once but their stories can be enjoyed by more than one owner. After all, a story doesn't change because it's been read before!

Reader reviews for Jacaranda Tree, The

From the publisher

This is H. E. Bates's acclaimed novel about Burma. During World War II, a small English community are forced to flee when Japanese forces invade Burma. Paterson, the manager of a rice mill, organizes the evacuation and takes with him his Burmese mistress and her young brother. The rest of the party take along their prejudices, their pettiness, and their squabbles, and a small enclave of English insularity moves north through Burma. Inevitably, as the journey continues, bitterness, tension, and insoluble conflict unfold. . . Inspired by Bates's period of service in the Eastern theater of war, The Jacaranda Tree skillfully evokes the atmosphere in Burma during the chaos of invasion.

About the author

H. E. Bates was educated at Kettering Grammar School. He worked as a journalist and clerk on a local newspaper before publishing his first book, after which he quickly acquired a reputation for his stories about English country life. During World War II, he was a squadron leader in the RAF and was commissioned to write stories about service life, which he published under the pseudonym of "Flying Officer X." In 1958, the Larkin family appeared for the first time in The Darling Buds of May, the first of the enduringly popular Larkin family novels. H. E. Bates was awarded the CBE in 1973 and died in 1974.
