About This Item
London: Constable & Co, 1928. Cloth. Very Good. 9" by 5.5". Robert William Buss. A limited edition copy of this Victorian novel. With twelve colour illustrations by Robert William Buss. This limited edition copy of Captain Frederick Marryat's novel is illustrated with colour plates by Robert William Buss. With five colour plates to volume I, and seven colour plates to volume II, collated and complete. This two-volume novel is centred on the lives the Thames watermen, and the episodes of the eponymous character's life that lead him to the Royal navy. Marrayat was himself a Royal Navy, and had a system of maritime flag signalling named after him. A noted pioneer of nautical fiction, the author was also an acquaintance of Charles Dickens. The illustrator of the present work is best known for his large watercolour, Dickens's dream. The majority of pages to this volume are untrimmed. In the publisher's original blue cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Lightly rubbed to the boards and the spine, with a little bumping to the head and tail of the spine. The front hinge is starting, but firm to volume II. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally clean with the occasional mark. Very Good
