SIGNED/INSCRIBED by Author to California historian Doyce Nunis in ink on the front free endpaper, "For Doyce Nunis / California's great historian! / With best wishes / Al Shumate". First edition limited to 500 un-numbered copies. red cloth. 6 1/2" x 9 1/4". Three illustrations from vintage photographs, including a frontispiece portrait of General Curtis. Index. The biography of Bostonian James F. Curtis, who came to San Francisco during the Gold Rush, became a fireman and a member of the first Committee of Vigilance in 1851. Thereafter, he became San Francisco's first Chief of Police, retiring in 1858. As a Major, he joined the volunteer campaign against the Paiutes in Nevada in 1860. In the Civil War, he served in various campaigns along the Pacific Coast, and was discharged as a Brigadier General in 1866. Thereafter, he was involved in Idaho railroads and was elected Idaho's Secretary of State in 1892. He returned to Boston in 1896, where he died in 1914 at the age of 88.
