About This Item
Tokyo: K. Ogawa, 1904. First edition. Oblong quarto (10 x 7 inches). Unpaginated and bound in the Japanese style. This title commences with a color woodblock folding illustration and it followed by 41 full page color woodblock illustrations of wedding preparations and ceremonies in various parts of Japan and is followed 22 pp. of text in English describing the actions illustrated in the plates. Colophon is on the inner rear wrapper. Publisher's string tied color pictorial wrappers. Front with a repaired top corner, a crease and some rubbing and rounding to the lower corner.Six of the plates show the different ways to dress one's hair. The "Old" ceremony discussed in the text is for a Daimyo's (Prince's) wedding and the remainder sheds light on the "New" aspects of the ceremony. While not so very rare in the trade OCLC does not record a single copy. Baxley's Stamps surmises that Mrrs. Curizuka was responsible for printing the plates while Ogawa printed the text. All text is in English and place names are printed in Romaji. This seems to be for a serious student and not just for tourists.
