A Modern Library Giant reprint edition offering all ten of the novels which together comprise "Jean-Christophe" in a single hefty volume. Romain Rolland's work first appeared from 1904 through 1912 and was the basis for the author's Nobel Prize in Literature, bestowed in 1915. Translated from the French by Gilbert Cannan. The novels are grouped into three books in this volume. Dust jacket with color painting of a Seine-side Parisian scene. --- In Toledano spine G5 / red cloth / gilt titling on black cover & spine blocks / black topstain / blank GA style endpapers / jacket style Ge, verso advertises 379 titles in ML catalog. Likely published c.1957 (though 1941 date appears in book). ML #G38.1. --- With considerable chafing to cloth at spine ends, mild age-toning to leaves and a couple of small cover corner bumps, else a sound, sturdy, tightly-bound copy. Price-clipped dust jacket with chips, a scratch and small tears to extremities, otherwise bright, intact and protected in new removable archival mylar protector.; Octavo - 8 to 9 in. tall; vi, [2], 600, 473, 504 pages .

Synopsis

Jean-Christophe is a novel sequence, written in the "bildungsroman" fashion, in ten volumes by Romain Rolland published between 1904 and 1912, for which he received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1915. It was translated into English by Gilbert Cannan. The first four volumes are sometimes grouped as Jean-Christophe, the next three as Jean-Christophe à Paris, and the last three as La fin du voyage ("Journey's End").
