About This Item

(Johannesburg: Witwatersrand University Press, for Rhodes University, 1996) 1868142620. Graham's Town Series, number 14. 8vo; original black boards, lettered in gilt on spine, with publisher's device in gilt to upper cover; laminated pictorial dustwrapper; pp. xii + 330, incl. index; maps; contemporary illustrations. Trace of spotting to edges. Near-fine condition. "James Butler - grandfather of the poet and professor Guy Butler - arrived in the Eastern Cape in 1876 as a sickly twenty-two-year old Londoner recuperating from a serious illness. He stayed for two and a half years, during a time of impending frontier war. In a journal he kept for his family back home, 'Jim' Butler, Quaker, teetotaller and later newspaper editor, recorded in down-to-earth fashion the daily life, politics, natural history and social encounters of this far-off corner of the colonies. 'Jim's Journal' has been re-edited and voluminously annotated for publication by Jane Garner." .
