David Porter was an early American naval captain who served on the USS Constitution and the USS Essex. Porter kept a journal of his time aboard the Essex, a journal that was quickly published after capture of the Essex.

This extremely rare first edition was published in Philadelphia and includes 14 full-page engravings. Hill calls the first edition of this book "suppressed and a very rare book" The illustrations depict native tribes, indigenous foods and fruits, and most desirably illustrated views of battle scenes, ships, and forts!
