Chez Giguet et Michaud. Paris. 1807. First edition. Extremely rare. A complete copy with half-title, three versions of the same frontis., each of which is slightly different, as if from earlier and later in the printing process. Tissue guard to each. 439pp + errata page. Sumptiously bound in full later 19th century red french morocco, ruled in gilt, raised bands with title and date in gilt to spine. All edges gilt, marbled endpapers with coat of arms of author in gilt on red card neatly affixed to front pastedown. Binder's name "DURU 1849" printed in tiny letters to reverse of front free endpaper. Prelims sl. browned, some foxing to first plate and its tissue guard and to rear endpapers. A fine copy of an extremely scarce item. Henri Huchet La Bedoyere was one of the most prominent translators of his time. He translated Tom Jones by Henry Fielding into French as well as Goethe's Werther from the German.
