About This Item

Santa Fe, New Mexico: Sunstone Press, 1973. First Ediiton Stated . Trade Paperback. Very Good. 6" X 8 1/2. Jordan, Louann - Cover Design and Illustrations. 184 Pages Indexed and a Glossary. Back cover price $4.95. The glued front endpaper is beginning to loosen. The remaining pages are bright, white, and tight. No marks of any sort. There is a diagram of The Walled Settlement of Santo Nino where the Twelve Families lived, With Their Names and the Ages of the Children. Great changes have occurred in the hundred or more years since Juan de Dios Zamora and his best friend, Felipe Garda, took their flocks up to pasture that late summer morning and saw the yellow-haired Navaho peering out from behind Big Rock. In 1868, the Navaho signed a treaty promising to live peacefully, and were allowed to return to their devastated reservation. They have recently celebrated a century of progress. Changes have taken place within the memory of people still living; the last of those who knew the old days was buried at Santo Nino not long ago. He was a very old man, and his death brought to mind the stories the elders had told about all that happened since 1864, for he was the son of the little brother of the boy named Felipe in this story. So, in his honor, and in memory of the pioneers of Santo Nino and elsewhere who had a part in the building of America, here is the story of Juan of Santo Nino, his family, relatives, friends and close neighbors, beginning in August 1863 and ending in 1864.
