About This Item

Madison, Wisconsin: The University of Wisconsin Press, 1998. First edition. Cloth. Fine/Near Fine. 9.5" by 6.5". Not Stated. A first edition copy of this memoir written by American novelist William Herrick, signed by Herrick and including a personal letter from him to his former agent. A near fine copy of this memoir written by American novelist William Herrick (1915-2004). Herrick, who is sometimes referred to as 'an American Orwell', served in the Abraham Lincoln Brigade which fought for Spain's independence during the Spanish Civil War. Many of his novels, including Hermanos! (1969), Love and Terror (1981), and Kill Memory (1981) were inspired by Herrick's time in Spain. This is a flawless first edition copy of this work. Enclosed in the original dust wrapper. The personal copy of Herrick's former agent and friend, 'Deborah', noted by a very personal letter loosely inserted into this copy. The letter reads: 'Dear Deborah, I was a damnfool, and know it. I've missed you all these years, and know that, too. And I'm very embarrassed. If you throw the book out, I hardly blame you. Whether you send the book out is barely important. You had my first couple books, now you have my last one. It's my coda, my life. And I send it to the only agent I really loved. Best, Bill'. Also containing an inscription from Herrick to the half title page: 'For Deborah, Take my word for it! Best, Bill, William Herrick'.  In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, excellent. Original unclipped dust wrapper has a touch of very light edgewear and some light sunning to the wrap. Inscribed by the author to the title page. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Fine
