About This Item

Lugd. Batauroum (Leiden): C. Boutesteyn, et al., 1701. 4th Edition. Very Good+. Original full vellum binding with lables on the spine containing the title, city, and date; labels chipped. Ex Libris inside front cover. Artistic title page engraving follwoed by full title page in red and black. Full title reads: Justini Historiae, Philippicae. Ex nova recensione Joannis Georgiigraveii cum ejusdem Castigationibus His accedunt integrae notae Jacobi Bongarsii, Francisci Modii, Matthiae Bernecceri, Isaaci Vossii, Tanaquilli Fabri, Joannis Vorstii & Joannis Schefferi. Editio quarta prioribus Auctior & Emendatior. The interior is clean and clear with minimal to no age foxing throughout. Justinus was a Roman historian about whom nothing is known personally; based on his style of latin and references in the history, he most likely lived in the 2nd century CE (AD). Based on the earlier work of Trogus' regarding the history of Macedonia, this subsequent work represents one of the few sources of the original now lost. Although a history, both Trogus and Justinus took liberties with the accounting like many other classical historians.
