Tall octavo, olive-green cloth, spine and front cover embossed with gilt lettering, xx, 390 pp., 16 double-sided black-and-white plates, illustrated throughout with black-and-white diagrams, three appendices included. Tail end of spine a little bumped, spotting on top edge of text block, spine of dust-jacket a little faded; otherwise a near-fine copy. First edition. An account of the Wright Brothers' determination to design, build, develop, test and successfully create an aeroplane that could fly. Combs, a pilot, and Caidin, an aviation writer, bring the experiences of Wilbur and Orville Wright to life in this engaging and informative retelling of the history-making events that occurred between 1899 and 1909. Included is a foreword by Neil Armstrong, who, when he set foot on the moon, planted a fragment of the original canvas structure of the Wright Brothers' plane along with the American flag.
