Engraved map 39.5 x 51.3 cm, eight border vignettes: costumed figured of Chinese, Japanese and Pegu men and women; four lozenge engravings at the head: city views of Macau and Quinzay [Hangzhou]; Chinese riding in a land yacht and a Japanese crucifixion; related descriptive text on the verso, central section and margins browned and age toned, central fold strengthened on the verso, edges strengthened, tape affecting the border of the two inner corners, small chip at one corner, minor edge wear, a good copy of a scarce, sought after map. Highly decorative map prepared for John Speed’s "Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World" (1627-1676), sea monsters and ships adorn the ocean, the Great Wall is depicted with annotations, Korea is shown as an island, and the border with India "Within" and "Without" the Ganges.
