About This Item
Berkeley.: University of California Press.. 1986.. Maps, xvi + 319pp, glossary, index, references, 23.6 x 16cm. From ancient times the ties based on patrilineal descent were matters of ethical concern and practical politics in China. During the late imperial period, descent groups with as many as hundreds of members became a common feature of the social landscape. This volume, which will be of interest to both historians and anthropologists, concludes that these groups were far more varied and complex than anthropologists, concludes that these groups were far more varied and complex than anthropologists have assumed. Using case studies from north and central China and covering all periods from the Sung through Ch'ing dynasties, the authors explore the diversity of kinship organization and provide new insights into its relation to ancestral rituals, marriage strategies, adoption practices, settlement patterns, and the political, economic and philosophical concerns of the elite. .
