About This Item

Assumed First Edition with date on title page matching copyright date and no subsequent printing(s) listed. Inscribed in ink by Kivie's wife of fifty years, Emily Kaplan. Book shows sligth fading of color on top of spine & age toning of top text block, else fine. There is no price on the jacket that shows edge wear to top of spine and tips of several edges. Jacket protected with removable mylar cover. Family lores suggests Kivie's involvement with civil rights began with a personal experience; while on his honeymoon he tried to enter a country club, but a sign that read "No Jews, No Dogs" stopped him from entering the facility. Kivie recognized that African-American citizens were likewise being treated and so began his life of fighting racial injustices. Kivie joined the NAACP at the age of 28 and was president of the NAACP from 1966 until his death in 1975. During those years, Mr Kaplan and his wife, Emily, were leaders in the civil rights movement for both African American and American Jews. Philanthropies included money to purchase the building to house the Center for Religious Action of the Reform group, Jewish Memorial Hospital in Boston, Brandeis College and the Boston Branch of the N.A.A.C.P. 6x9.25 in. with B/W photos, 258 pg.
