Description:
New York: A.L. Burt Company, 1924. About Very Good, lacking the dustjacket. gilt lettering at spine dulled and barely legible, cloth rubbed at the tips, prior owner name front endpage, faint erasures rear pastedown. From the personal library of Will H. Hays, with a tipped in single page yellow typing paper, dated Jan. 14, 1947, titled "References to WILL H. HAYS and Topics of interest in "Illiterate Digest" by Will Rogers". Pencil underlining and marginal checkmarks on pages referenced. Obviously a copy that was well read and referenced by Hays, who managed Warren G. Hardings successful campaign for the Presidency of the U.S. and was subsequently appointed Postmaster General. After a year in that position, he resigned to become most famously known as the first President of Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America (MPPDA), which under his guidance published a blacklist of actors and workers studios should not hire, inserted moral clauses into actors' contracts,…

This item is currently on reserve; please contact dealer for more details. Owosso, Mich.: Cartwrights Photography, 1924. Original panoramic photograph, 8" x 41 3/4", unframed, rolled. Near Fine, slight soiling rear, 1/4" tear and small crease top edge. Original stamp in blue inkon rear stating "Duplicates can be had for $1.50 at Cartwrights, Owosso". Milton V. Cartwright is listed in the "Directory of Early Michigan Photographers" by David V. Tinder, published by Clements Library, 2013. One of the largest gatherings ever of the Ku Klux Klan, over 100,000 people swarmed to Jackson, Michigan on July 4th, 1924 to witness or take part in the fair-like festivities of the so-called "Klonklavation". Thousands of Klansmen marched through the streets of Jackson in a parade that stretched for 2 miles and included 17 floats, 8 bands, and a women's drum corps. At the meeting grounds, which were closely guarded by several hundred Klansmen, the crowds were entertained by a biplane and aerial stuntsman( the plane and a parachutist are seen above the campgrounds in the photograph!). A truly amazing and RARE photograph showing the Klan at the height of their numbers in the US. Internal divisions, criminal behavior by leaders, and external opposition brought about a collapse in membership by 1930.. First Printing. Photograph. Near Fine.
