University of Chicago Press. 1946. Fine Second impression showing portrait of negro slave on front of brown cloth boards having copper lettering to spine. Good plus unclipped ($3.50) jacket shows edge-wear, small chip at top of spine, some paper loss on bottom of spine and a closed 0.75 in. cut on upper right of front. The author was the Folklore Editor of the Federal Writer's Project in 1938-1939. The book is the "unconscious history" of slavery as told by former Negro slaves. "for here the last of the ex-slaves become their own historians and record for men the world over the story of one people walking the arduous road to liberty." (jacket back). 6x9.25. 286 pg.
